About the Graduate School

The International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) on Interdisciplinary Plant Biology is a joint initiative of the Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research and the University of Cologne. The program provides a dynamic and international research environment focused on studying fundamental biological processes in plants to advance future plant breeding strategies.

All academic training, research discussions, and skill development sessions are conducted in English. Each PhD candidate is guided by a scientific advisory committee and receives continuous support throughout their doctoral journey.

Research Focus

The IMPRS conducts research across more than 30 research groups investigating fundamental plant processes. Areas of focus include:

  • Regulatory networks influencing reproductive development and growth.

  • Innate immunity and the influence of the microbiome on plant health.

  • Computational modeling and mathematical biology.

  • Advanced imaging, structural biochemistry, and genomic analysis.

Researchers employ a wide range of experimental and computational techniques to address complex biological questions and contribute to plant science innovation.

Candidate Profile

Applicants should hold, or expect to hold, a Master’s degree in biology, bioinformatics, computational biology, or a related discipline. Successful candidates must demonstrate a record of academic and research excellence, and possess strong written and verbal English communication skills.
