Overview

Loughborough University invites applications for a fully funded 4-year Engineering Doctorate (EngD) focusing on Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and model quality evaluation during digital transformation. This prestigious opportunity is delivered in collaboration with Leonardo, a leading UK engineering and defence technology company.

Modern engineering environments are increasingly dependent on robust systems models. Yet, assessing the quality of those models often relies on subjective expert judgement rather than consistent and measurable standards. This EngD aims to change that.

Project Summary

The project investigates how MBSE can be optimized to accelerate development cycles and improve decision-making in complex engineering environments. It focuses on evaluating whether a model is “good enough” at a particular stage in a project lifecycle, rather than how technically perfect it is.

Areas of exploration include:

  • Framework selection

  • Modelling languages

  • Modelling processes

  • Modelling depth/breadth: what should be modelled and why

  • Model completeness and stopping criteria

  • Methods for tracking and scoring model quality

  • Evolution of quality requirements over time

  • Techniques to improve model quality

  • Application of Machine Learning, AI, and Large Language Models to optimize MBSE

The research will ultimately deliver a framework enabling stakeholders to objectively evaluate model quality, enhancing collaboration between customers and suppliers and supporting the development of new architecture standards.

Programme & Location

  • Programme: EngD in Model-Based Systems Engineering

  • Primary Location: A Leonardo UK site (industry-based research environment)

  • University: Loughborough University

Loughborough University is globally recognized for research excellence, with 94% of research impact rated world-leading or internationally excellent (REF 2021).

Supervision

  • Primary Supervisor: Professor Michael Henshaw

  • Secondary Supervisor: Dr Melanie King

Funding Information

This EngD is fully funded for UK applicants, including:

  • £27,000 tax-free stipend per year

    • Includes a rare £5,000 enhancement across the duration

  • Full UK tuition fees covered

  • Funding valid for October 2026, January 2027, April 2027, or July 2027 entry cohorts

International students are not eligible for this funding scheme.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Hold (or be expected to achieve) a first-class or upper second-class degree in engineering, systems engineering, design, computing, or a related field.

  • Meet UK Security Clearance requirements (SC level) — typically requires minimum five years of permanent UK residency.

  • Demonstrate strong interest in MBSE, systems modelling, or digital engineering.

Relevant experience with modelling frameworks, ML/AI applications, or systems design is advantageous but not mandatory.

How to Apply

Applications must be submitted via the official online portal:

  1. Under Programme Name, select Model-Based Systems Engineering EngD

  2. Under the Finance section, enter the project reference: FP-MH-2026

Applications should include:

  • Personal statement

  • Updated CV

  • Academic transcripts and degree certificates

  • Contact details of two referees (one must be from highest degree qualification)

  • Research proposal (optional but may strengthen the application)

Early applications are strongly encouraged, as interviews may begin before the deadline and the advert may be withdrawn once filled.
