About the Project – NIMSKY
The NIMSKY project (Nanoscale Imaging of Magnetic Skyrmion Dynamics in Thin Film Devices) aims to study nanoscale magnetic quasiparticles known as skyrmions. These entities move under electric current and require minimal power, making them highly promising for future low-energy computational technologies.
The PhD candidate will focus on generating and imaging these skyrmions by fabricating nanostructured thin films using advanced cleanroom facilities at NTNU NanoLab and conducting in-situ TEM characterization at the NORTEM Trondheim Node.
Research Goals

Fabricate and characterize nanostructured thin-film materials.

Develop customizable in-situ TEM chips using back-etching techniques.
-
Conduct in-operando studies of magnetic skyrmion devices using state-of-the-art ARM300CF TEM.

Advance the understanding of skyrmion motion and properties under electric current at the nanoscale.
Duties and Responsibilities
-
Complete doctoral education and obtain a PhD in Physics.
-
Conduct independent and collaborative research aligned with NIMSKY objectives.
-
Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals.
-
Participate in NORTEM Trondheim research group and international collaborations.

Attend conferences and contribute to knowledge dissemination.
Required Qualifications
-
Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Nanotechnology, Physics, or Material Science.

Strong academic record equivalent to a Norwegian B or better.
-
Proven experience in experimental physics or nanofabrication.

Basic programming skills (preferably in Python).

Excellent written and spoken English communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications

Experience with electron microscopy, particularly TEM.

Background in cleanroom work, photolithography, or etching techniques.

Familiarity with solid-state physics and magnetic materials.

Salary and Employment Conditions
The position is classified under PhD Candidate (code 1017) with a gross annual salary of NOK 550,800, subject to a 2% statutory pension contribution. The employment period is 3 years, conditional on admission to NTNU’s PhD programme in Physics within three months of appointment.
