Overview

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics & Computer Science (EEMCS) at TU Delft is offering a fully funded PhD position within the newly established Future of Software Engineering (FUSE) Lab. This strategic collaboration between TU Delft and Meta Platforms aims to reshape how software engineering productivity is understood, measured, and enhanced—especially in the age of generative AI.

This position focuses on the development of AI-informed engineering productivity metrics and innovative experimentation tools that support thousands of developers at Meta and beyond.

About the Research Track: Engineering Productivity Metrics

As AI transforms the daily workflows of engineers, traditional software engineering metrics no longer capture the full picture—especially for machine learning engineers whose work may not result in direct deployments or may not immediately affect A/B test results.

This PhD project aims to solve this by:

  • Developing new productivity metrics tailored for machine learning engineers

  • Improving experimentation frameworks with early, AI-driven feedback

  • Creating tools for shift-left experimentation, enabling better configuration of A/B tests

  • Enhancing developer experience at massive scale

  • Contributing to open science, sharing results with the global engineering community

You will work closely with researchers from TU Delft and Meta’s Dev Infra team, combining academic rigor with industry-scale research opportunities.

Who is Eligible?

Required:

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, AI, or related areas

  • Strong English proficiency (per TU Delft Graduate School requirements)

Additional Preferred Requirements:

  • Research-oriented mindset (curiosity, critical reasoning, data fluency)

  • Engineering skills (ability to build tools, prototypes, experimental systems)

  • Collaborative and communicative personality

Funding, Contract & Benefits

PhD candidates receive:

  • 4-year fully funded contract, split into:

    • 1.5-year initial contract + go/no-go assessment

    • 2.5-year continuation upon satisfactory progress

  • Salary:

    • €3059 (year 1) to €3881 (year 4)

  • Extras:

    • 8% holiday allowance

    • 8.3% year-end bonus
