About the Opportunity

The University of Bergen (UiB), one of Europe’s leading research institutions, invites applications for a full-time, 3-year PhD position in the Department of Clinical Dentistry. The role is part of the prestigious EU Horizon Europe GreenNanoBone project, aimed at advancing next-generation biomaterials and hydrogel systems for bone regeneration.

This PhD position offers a unique opportunity to work within a multidisciplinary team at the Tissue Engineering Group, combining biotechnology, dentistry, medical research, and advanced 3D bioprinting techniques.

Research Focus and Work Tasks

The successful candidate will contribute to cutting-edge research involving:

  • Development of bioprinted hydrogel scaffolds designed for bone regeneration.

  • In vitro and in vivo cytocompatibility testing to assess biosafety and biological performance.

  • Validation of GreenNanoBone hydrogels using patient-derived cells, specifically within disease models of Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (MRONJ).

  • Creation of advanced 3D MRONJ models for preclinical evaluation.

  • Collaborative work within a highly skilled international research environment at UiB.

This project integrates material science, tissue engineering, advanced imaging, and disease modeling.

Academic Qualifications

Applicants must have:

  • A Master’s degree in medicine, dentistry, or equivalent life/health sciences discipline.

  • Strong motivation and the ability to perform independent, structured research.

  • Excellent collaboration skills needed for a multidisciplinary research environment.

  • Fluency in written and spoken English (documentation required).

Additional Requirements

  • Applicants with degrees from outside Norway must provide certified translations (English or Scandinavian languages).

  • Mandatory HK-dir recognition of bachelor’s and master’s degrees, except for:

    • Nordic degree holders

    • EEA medical graduates with a license to practice in Norway

  • Documentation must be included when applying (or receipt of HK-dir application).

PhD Programme & Training

The candidate will enroll in UiB’s structured PhD Programme at the Faculty of Medicine, with:

  • Coursework and research milestones completed within 3 years.

  • Submission of a project plan within 3 months of starting.

  • Annual progress reviews and engagement in department-led research activities.

Employment Conditions

  • Full-time, fixed-term PhD employment (3 years)

  • Salary:

    • NOK 570,000 (standard PhD salary)

    • NOK 585,000 (for applicants with ≥1 year as GP or Dentist)

    • NOK 605,000 (for medical/dental specialists)

  • Membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund
