The Technical University of Denmark (DTU Electro) invites highly motivated candidates to apply for a fully funded PhD position in Photonic Reservoir Computing in Coupled Resonant Structures, offered under the prestigious EU-funded MINDnet Doctoral Network.
This project explores next-generation computing paradigms inspired by neuromorphic principles and powered by advanced photonic systems. The goal is to investigate and optimize nonlinear photonic dynamics, particularly within coupled micro-ring resonators, to develop energy-efficient architectures capable of high-speed analog computing.
Project Scope
The PhD candidate will:
-
Investigate nonlinear dynamics and computational performance in photonic resonators.
-
Evaluate coupled cavity configurations for enhanced reservoir computing.
-
Experimentally validate small-scale photonic circuits with fewer than 10 cavities.
-
Participate in collaborative research activities across Europe.
-
Engage in public outreach including social media, YouTube content, and public events.
This PhD is embedded within the MINDnet network, consisting of 15 PhD positions across 7 universities, one research center, and two companies. The focus areas span neuromorphic computing, photonics, electronics, and biological neuron systems.
Secondments
The candidate will complete mandatory academic and industrial secondments:
-
Technical University of Ilmenau, Germany
-
HPE, Belgium
-
University of Trento, Italy
Eligibility Requirements
-
A completed two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS) or equivalent.
-
Strong academic background in photonics, physics, optical engineering, or related fields.
-
Compliance with Marie Skłodowska-Curie Mobility Rules (must not have lived/worked in Denmark for >12 months in the last 36 months).
-
Strong written and spoken English proficiency.
Funding and Employment
The position is fully funded for 3 years, based on the Danish collective agreement.
-
Base Salary: DKK 29,691.75/month
