Researcher Profile PhD Student

The Space Research and Planetary Sciences Division at the University of Bern seeks a PhD student to investigate the chemical complexity of cometary matter using legacy mass spectrometry data from ESA’s Rosetta mission. The Double Focusing Mass Spectrometer (DFMS) revealed unique organic signatures that can serve as references for future astrobiology missions.

Project Focus

The research integrates:

  • High-resolution mass spectrometry analysis

  • Chemical analytics of neutral gases

  • Astrobiology & prebiotic chemistry

  • Data interpretation to support future life-detection missions

Using Rosetta DFMS legacy data, the project aims to identify chemical groups relevant to astrobiology—such as sugars, lipids, and prebiotic molecules—through advanced analysis methods. In some cases, reference measurements will be performed using flight spare instruments in the laboratory.

Tasks

  • Systematic analysis of high-resolution mass spectra

  • Identification of organic molecules of cometary origin

  • Data interpretation for astrobiological relevance

  • Potential laboratory reference measurements

  • Presentation of research at international conferences

  • Work within a multidisciplinary, leading European space research team

Requirements

Mandatory:

  • MSc degree in Astrobiology, Astrochemistry, Physics, Chemistry, or related fields

Strong Advantages:

  • Experience with mass spectrometry

  • Python programming skills

What the University Offers

  • SNSF-regulated salary

  • Full-time PhD position (100%)

  • 25 days annual vacation + Swiss public holidays

  • Childcare allowance

  • Equal opportunity, diverse, inclusive workplace
